EDUCATION

Carl believes we should limit the federal government's role in our education system, allowing the Commonwealth of Kentucky and its local towns to make education decisions that best suit their unique needs. Since the federal Department of Education's inception in 1979 (in violation of the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution), hundreds of billions of tax dollars have been poured into our education system with little constructive progress to show for it. The federal government's one-size-fits-all approach robs states of their sovereignty and has failed our students. We have witnessed a steady "dumbing down" of curriculum and standards with a corresponding decline in performance relative to students in other industrialized nations. It is a travesty that low-income children are trapped in failing public schools with no hope in sight. Parents, not government bureaucrats, should have the power to decide where their children go to school. As the son of two retired school teachers, Carl is sensitive to the needs of teachers and the challenges they face in and out of the classroom. Proud of his Kentucky roots and scornful of the negative stereotypes often associated with our state, particularly in the realm of education, Carl will work tirelessly to make our education system a model for the nation.
